Winter Driving...Be Like a Boyscout....Prepare

Our Commercial Insurance Vice President, Wayne Clarke, plays the good samaritan and discovers that good intentions aren't enough in the winter.....

I came upon a stranded motorists, his vehicle would not start, I offered my assistance only to find out I had left my booster cables at home.

Tips to remember this winter season:

  1. Install winter tires. Winter tires improve driving safety by providing better traction in snow, slush and icy conditions.
  2. Winter start up are hard on your vehicle, get your car winter ready with a maintenance check up.
  3. Visibility is paramount,  replace worn or broken wiper blades and burnt out front and rear lights.  Clear snow and ice from all windows, lights, mirrors, hood and roof.
  4. Make sure your radiator is full.
  5. Have a winter survival kit, recommended items to have:

(i)                  First aid supplies

(ii)                Windshield scraper and snow brush

(iii)               Flares and matches for lighter

(iv)              Gloves, Flashlight

(v)               Shovel, traction mat , sand or kitty litter

(vi)              Extra clothing and footware

(vii)             Booster cables

(vi)              If you have a cell phone, make sure it is charged and bring it with you.

The list can go on and on, most of all pay attention, be proactive, watch the vehicle in front of you and behind you to give yourself lots of room for turns and stopping.
